Not every move means changing address. A growing team needs more desks, two departments need to swap floors, a floor needs reconfiguring around a new way of working, or people simply need relocating within the building as the business changes. Universal handles these internal office moves across London, from a single departmental swap to a rolling desk churn programme, with the same planning and crews we bring to a full relocation. The work is almost always done out of hours, so the office is reconfigured overnight or across a weekend and your team returns to a finished space without losing a working day.
Internal moves and desk churn
Internal moves, often called churn, are the ongoing relocations that happen inside a building as teams grow, shrink and reorganise. Moving people and their equipment from one desk, floor or zone to another sounds simple, but at any scale it needs the same discipline as a larger move: a plan, a floor layout, labelling, and a crew that knows the order of work. We plan each internal move to a floor plan, label desks and equipment to their destinations, and move people and their belongings so they arrive at a set-up desk rather than a pile of boxes. Done properly, an internal move is invisible to the working day.

Floor swaps and departmental moves
Reconfiguration between floors is one of the most common internal moves, and one of the most disruptive if it is not planned. Swapping two departments between floors, or consolidating teams onto fewer floors, means sequencing the move so both teams end up in the right place without a bottleneck at the lift or a day of downtime. We plan the sequence, book the goods lift and any building access, and run the swap in phases or overnight so each team lands on its new floor ready to work. Larger reconfigurations are managed as a project, with the structure set out on our office move project management page.
Furniture reconfiguration
Internal moves usually mean furniture as well as people. We dismantle, move and reassemble desks, benches, storage and partitions, and reconfigure furniture to a new layout, whether that is adding desks to a growing team, breaking a floor into new zones, or reworking a space around a different way of working. Existing furniture is reused and rearranged rather than treated as a house clearance, and anything coming out of use can be moved to storage until it is needed. We also supply crate hire for internal moves, so belongings and equipment travel safely between desks.

Desk churn programmes
For larger organisations, internal moves are not a one-off but a constant, and it is more efficient to run them as a programme than to arrange each one from scratch. We can deliver a scheduled desk churn programme, handling regular internal moves to an agreed process and timetable, typically in out-of-hours slots, so the facilities team has a single, reliable arrangement for the moves that happen every week or month. Each move still runs to a plan and a floor layout, but the process is repeatable, which keeps the ongoing churn controlled rather than ad hoc.
Out of hours, without stopping the business
The point of an internal move is to change the workspace without interrupting the work, so we run reconfigurations in the evening, overnight or across a weekend. The floor is cleared, the furniture reconfigured and the desks set up while the office is closed, and your team returns to a finished layout. For a live business, that is the difference between a reconfiguration and a lost day, and it is how we run internal moves as standard.
IT at the new desk
An internal move only works if people can sit down and log in. We disconnect equipment at the old desk and reconnect and check it at the new one, so screens, docks and phones are working before the day starts. Where a reconfiguration affects more than a handful of desks, this is planned alongside the move to a cutover order, in the same way as our full IT relocation service.
Why Universal for internal moves
We are a commercial relocation specialist, and we have moved and reconfigured London offices since 1978. We are ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified, CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, members of the British Association of Removers and a multiple BAR Commercial Mover of the Year winner, so an internal move is delivered to the same standards and with the same accountability as a full relocation. Internal moves sit alongside our full office relocation service, and can be arranged as a one-off or an ongoing programme.
